How often should I receive a massage?
This is a question I receive quite often and it varies for individuals and it depends on factors such as budget and unique needs.
Generally: On average, it’s very common to see your massage therapist once every 4 to 6 weeks. This works if you have no serious conditions nor a lot of dense muscle or fascia to work through.
Chronic Conditions: If you have ongoing chronic conditions such as fibromyalgia, scar tissue pain, soft tissue injuries, osteoarthritis, insomnia, migraines or headaches, sciatica, arthritis, hypertension or many others, you may need a massage somewhere in the every 1 to 3 week range. This is also recommended for active body builders and athletes and may adjust over time.
Stress Relief: Biweekly or Monthly
If you are trying to find the sweet spot for your massage schedule you may need to start with every 3 to 4 weeks. If by the second week you are already in need of that upcoming massage, then perhaps at first you need every week or biweekly. Over time this could begin to change as issues become less of a bother for you. You may eventually find that you can tolerate every 4 to 6 weeks, but if the relief that the massage created for you runs out after week or two, you may need to increase your number of monthly sessions until the issue is worked out. Many times, massage can completely work out an issue. However, there are conditions that massage can help with even if it doesn’t cure the problem. Many say that quality of life is improved whether it erases or reduces the symptoms of the condition.
What about timing? Should you get a 60 or a 90 minute massage?
Another excellent question! For this you can also refer to the information above. Digging deeper however it’s good to consider how much you have to address during your session as well as your body type. If you are a tall body builder, 90 minutes will probably be your best friend. If you are not a body builder or athlete but you exercise regularly and have several tight places you may need to address the 90 would be good for you as well. If you just love massage! That’s also a reason you may want 90! Full body 60’s are wonderful but if you have multiple areas of concern and you still want the full body experience, the 90 minute sessions are perfect. If you only have the time or budget for 60 minutes and you have several areas of concern, my advice is to let the therapist stay focused on those areas. This gives the them time to properly address your needs.
Communicate with your therapist!
Tell them what is bothering you today. Remind them if you have any ongoing issues you are working through. A good therapist listens to you. A good therapist watches your body language, gait and movement. By listening and watching we are better able to create a roadmap for you and your massage sessions.
